Moving soon? Relocating for a new job or better living standards? Just the thought of moving any distance probably has you really anxious and feeling stress before you even pack a box. Some simple tips can help make it stress-free.
Hire your moving company far in advance. The farther away you have to move, the farther in advance you should hire the company. They have to figure out if they can spare “x” number of days to help you pack up and move the required distance and make it back in time to help other customers.
For example, if you are moving a thousand miles away, it will take at least five days to pack the truck, drive the distance, unpack the truck, and that’s not counting the extra days it takes for the movers to drive back. All in all, it’s a ten-day move, minimum, for them. Hire three to six months in advance to ensure that your moving company has you on their schedule and confirm it with a month to go.
If you need help packing, hire a moving company that can help you pack and will bring moving supplies with them. Coordinate with the company for extra days to do this. If you are going to rely on the team to do all the packing and putting things on and off the truck, you remove the stress this part of the process usually causes.
If your company reimburses you for moving expenses, save all your receipts. Some employers add it to the first check at the new job location while others may cut a second check for moving. Either way, you can’t get reimbursed if you don’t have the receipts to prove that you moved.
If your company doesn’t reimburse for moving expenses, you can write this off on your taxes. You will still need your receipts in case the IRS asks you to prove it.
