If you’re looking to move to the Boston area, why not
consider Reading? This lovely suburb is situated north of Boston, less than
20 miles from city center, yet has a small town feel to it. Because of its
proximity to Boston, Reading has a lot of roots in the Revolutionary War,
making it a fascinating place for history buffs. Reading also has plenty of
activities for kids, adults, and outdoorsy types.
The most prominent historical landmark is Parker House, a
historical landmark and the oldest building in Reading that opens to visitors
from May to October on Sundays. You can learn about the Parker family at the
former tavern, who played a large role in the town’s founding, as well as the
Revolutionary War. The original builder of the house, Ephraim Parker, fought in
the early stages of the war and hosted notable figures from the war at the
tavern.
You’ll find another former Parker tavern near the center of
town, known as the Capt. Nathaniel Parker Red House, where Revolutionary
figures like Alexander Hamilton passed through. Though it’s a private home,
it’s still worth seeing.
Jordan’s IMAX theater in Reading has 500 seats and is fitted
with the latest sound and IMAX technology, making for a unique movie-going
experience. Kids can also enjoy the BeanStalk Adventure Ropes Course, which
features a more complex course with over thirty challenges for older kids, and
a course closer to the ground for younger kids. Burbank Ice Arena stays open
year-round, offering fun activities such as open skate and pickup hockey games.
Close by, you’ll also find Xtreme Craze Woburn, a
multi-level gaming center featuring laser tag, an inflatable trampoline park
and an arcade.
Reading hosts a large street fair in the autumn, with over
one hundred booths from local businesses, a car show, live entertainment, and
even crafts and inflatables for kids. The Quannapowitt Players, a local
community theater group, put on several professional shows each year for those
who enjoy seeing plays.
Lake Quannapowitt features several activities for those who
love being outdoors. The nearby Wakefield Community Boating provides kayak and
paddleboat rentals throughout the summer, and jogging trails run all along the
shore.
The Reading Town Forest, planted by residents in the 1930s,
has four marked trails for walking and scenic views along the river.
